Therapy for engineers is designed to:
1) Use the skills engineers, and other analytically-minded individuals, have developed over a lifetime to aid in their mental health and healing processes.
2) Translate interpersonal and mental health challenges into terms which allow the use of analytical skills sets.
3) Aid in communication of information from a non-engineering framework into a structured format that aids in understanding the unspoken feelings and underlying needs.
As an engineer, I understand that the stereotype of a therapy session often seems to be completely different from the world we know. Concrete facts are replaced with questions about feelings. The meeting agenda is replaced by a long winding narrative that may or may not reach a useful conclusion, at least in this session. The person across from you will smile and ask you to trust the process, and to take leaps of faith into the unknown. As a trained psychologist, I can appreciate the methods other therapists can use, and I acknowledge their effectiveness. At the same time, I know how frustrating this can be to an engineer, or someone who is used to analyzing data, or resolve things logically. So I will offer you this:
Let me be your translator. There is datum to be analyzed. There are laws of behavior and mental recovery that exist. They are just types of data and rules you aren't used to collecting or exploring. Behavior and thoughts start making sense once you begin to understand them in the evolutionary context in which they developed over generations. I can help bring this into a more classical and logical context, and explain how irrational seeming behaviors actually start making perfect sense when all the context is in place.
Regardless of your background or training, people rarely come to therapy for challenges that are easily met, or problems that are easily solved. In therapy, we come together as two experts. While I am an expert when it comes to psychological phenomena and the latest advancements in the treatment, I respect you as the expert on your lived experience and the challenges you face. I will set the stage for growth and change by creating a compassionate, accepting, and non-judgemental space. We can start our discussion on how we can work together by setting up a 20 minute free initial consultation.
Do you have a partner or loved one who is extremely capable in their highly technical field of study but have trouble understanding you or what you need? They are clearly smart, so what is getting in their way? Just as I offer to engineers to translate therapy for them, I can offer you a similar deal: Let me help you reach your analytically-minded loved one with your heart.
Having been in both the cold and logical world of engineering and the tumultuous and fire-y world of human connection, I have been working my entire career to connect the two. I have hard earned insights that can help bridge the gap and help you to understand your logical, solution-focused loved one and help them to understand that your unhappiness or concern isn't a problem to just be solved, but an opportunity to become closer than you ever have been before.
So let's work together. I will set the stage for growth and change by creating a compassionate, accepting, and non-judgemental space. We can start our discussion by setting up a 20 minute free initial consultation.
